A loud sound.
Her eyes opened . 'Just a dream ', she thought.
And her bed disappeared. She fell down , who knows where.......
Her head hit something and she looked around.............trees , leaves....
She was running......why??
"I hope you will be attentive in my class and keep your mischief level at minimum ", a distant voice rang in her ears. She opened her eyes and saw a vast of blue. The sky.......maybe. Dotted with small cotton like clouds. She scanned the scene in front of her eyes. Her right cheek felt wet and numb. Her right hand was sore and her neck hurt. She moved a little and realised her head was resting on her arm with her fingers dangling from the desk .
May sat up straight and looked around. She was in a room , a classroom of almost forty .Those seated near her were staring at her .The teacher was saying something with her back towards the class. May rubbed her eyes and wiped her mouth. She was seated close to a big window .She looked around trying to make sense of the situation .
The teacher turned around and looked straight at her.
"Ah! Good morning Miss Hayworth", she said in a sweet voice . The kind of voice which is sweet in an awkward, scary way.
There was giggling in the classroom.
"You might have joined today, but are no exception to my rules. Which does not include napping in between lessons. I would appreciate it if you direct your attention towards what i am teaching ."
Embarrassed and scared , May stood up suddenly , her chair knocking the table behind her.
"Now, now , rumble in the Bronx , sit down and be attentive ,this is the last time i am warning you ", the teacher said and turned towards the chalkboard. She sat down carefully this time .
The rest of the day passed uneventfully for May .She found herself staring into space most of the time, not following anything that was taught .During the fourth period , the teacher caught her yawning, twice. First days were always bad for May. She knew that from experience.
She was startled when the midday bell rang .She held her head in her hands , it was still spinning .
"You need fresh air ", she heard a voice behind her .
She turned around and saw a black haired boy about as tall as her . His black and white striped uniform tie was was out of his dark gray trousers but was tight around his neck.
"I mean thats what i think," he added without looking at her . He put his hand inside his bag and pulled out a lunch box . "I am sorry about rocking your desk like that earlier"'May said as he almost exited the classroom .
He turned around and smiled .
May smiled back.
